Reduce the time it takes for users to register and verify their ID, as well as to minimize drop-off.

Introduction

For this project, we researched user behaviour to understand the difficulties encountered during the registration process and to prioritize potential solutions. This project was conducted for a German digital staffing agency and is anonymized under an NDA.

Our process

The client submitted their request, explaining the issues they were facing with their current registration and ID verification flow. We then divided the project into smaller tasks and began working on the following deliverables.

The problem

Based on quantitative data collected by the company and our initial flow testing, we identified the following issues users face:

  • 1.5 hours on avg. to complete registration and ID verification.
  • No editing function, preventing users from recovering from mistakes.
  • ID verification rejections due to input errors.
  • 24-hour wait for staffing contract before applying for jobs.
  • Repetitive questions and overcrowded pages.

Hypothesis

The high drop-off rates are due to users becoming frustrated with long wait times and mistakes they cannot correct, as well as their lack of understanding about why certain information is being requested.

  1. Ask users to download the app.
  2. Ask users to register and verify their ID.
  3. For each new screen they encounter, encourage them to describe what they see and understand.
  4. Record where and why users get stuck.

Prioritisation workshop

To ensure the success of our work, we decided to run a 1-hour prioritization workshop with our client.

  1. We began by presenting the results of our user testing to the stakeholders.
  2. We asked them to think of solutions to address the problems identified through testing and to consider how we could solve them.
  3. The stakeholders presented and explained their proposed solutions, while we grouped them into clusters.
  4. Finally, we voted on the top 5 solutions and prioritized them based on Impact and Effort.

Designing a new flow

After prioritizing our possible solutions for the app, we created a new flow to address our main user pain points while focusing on changes that would significantly decrease drop-off rates.

Final designs - Registration

By collecting only the data essential for registration, we were able to reduced the number of steps a user must go through to complete this process from 9 to 7.

The user can begin searching for jobs as soon as they register their account. To apply for their first job, they must complete their profile either through a job listing page or by following one of our prompts.

Profile completion & ID verification

The new structure lets users review and correct their information before ID verification. Informative screens and explanatory texts help them understand why the information is needed and what to expect next.

Job application

After completing their profile, users can submit their first job application and have an overview of applications and upcoming jobs on their profile page. While waiting for a response, the agency creates their staffing contract in the background, significantly reducing wait times.

Results

By implementing the new strategic UX redesigns, our client was able to minimize user errors, speed up job applications, and increase their ID verification success rates.
